Section 6 Meet

The Lakeville Nordic Ski Teams (North and South) are sending twelve athletes to the State Meet on Friday, February 15, 2008 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, MN.

The No 2 rated skier in the state, Hans Nygren, won the individual boys title by posting a 27 second win in the morning classic time trial, followed by an afternoon skate pursuit in which he increased the margin of victory to 59 seconds. Tyler King and Stu Lombardo, starting the pursuit fourth and fifth based on their classic times, switched spots as Stu made the pass in the skate portion of the race. Derek Schlager finished a solid tenth to round out the boys qualifiers to the state meet. John Muenchow had an inspired classic race knowing his team points counted after the back injury suffered by teammate Jake Panzer.

The South boys were favored to win the title with the return of last years top four which finished two points behind champion Hastings. Even with the injury, they still came within four points of upsetting title winners Apple Valley on their home course. Ben Pieper was the final skier for the second place South squad.

The North boys finished fifth out of eleven teams. Skiing with state qualifier Tyler King were Jon Knutson (22nd), Ben Saxton, Lewis Kunik, Jake Endersbe, Ben Rydberg, and Sam Bach. The future for the North boys is bright as 2 of the top 4 who score for teams, Ben Saxton and Lewis Kunik, are 8th graders.

The girls team race was an exciting three way battle between last years third, fourth and fifth place squads. Not one point scorer from any of the three schools graduated after Park of Cottage Grove beat Winona by two points and South by six.

This year, Park had a morning lead of eight and ten points over South and Winona respectively. The South girls had their best team race of the year in the second half, not only erasing the deficit, but posting a seven point victory!

Parks Nicole Westphal won the individual title followed by her teammate, Kelsey Gleich. Olivia Bagnall, a soccer teammate with Kelsey, spotted her 31 seconds in the classic time trial but made up 30 of them in the skate pursuit with the second fastest skate time of the day, finishing one second behind in third place by .6 seconds and inches away from valuable team points. Katie Stiles and Jordyn Ross had their sights set on the sixth place classic skier from Park. With the first and fourth fastest skate times, they achieved their goal, moving up from seventh and ninth place respectively to fifth and sixth overall just behind 4th place North skier Megan Smith. Megan, a junior, has returned to her form of a year ago and earned her 4th trip to the state meet as an individual, starting in 5th place after the classic race and moving up to finish in fourth place overall. Now all that was needed was for Albany Zweber-Langer or Mallory Maiers to finish three or more places ahead of Parks fourth skier. Albany started 14th and Mallory 16th just ahead of the Park skier in 17th place. Albany slid up one spot and finished thirteenth, securing the first team trip to the state meet for a South Nordic squad. Maurita Denley and Rachel Barnes also gained valuable experience and a trip to the state meet by qualifying for the section team as freshmen.

Tri-captains Jordan Cahill, Carissa Bodette, and state qualifier Megan Smith led their team from North to a fourth place finish with help from a rookie freshman. The top freshman and top rookie in the Section 1 girls race was Norths Michelle Ferguson. Michelle finished in 11th place after the classic race. This put her in position for the skate pursuit with 2 other skiers from Winona to battle for the individual state qualifying spot. Although Michelle just missing the spot by 3 places, finished 14 overall despite the well- fought battle from this first year skier.

The future of Lakeville girls skiing (North and South) looks excellent as thirteen of todays fourteen skiers return next year including underclassmen, Jenna Saunders (9), Emma Johnson (8), and Anika Clark (10).
